I was waiting for a sudden escape to the beach and didn't get the serious nature of the storyline until a quarter way through. Only 3% of viable tortoise habitat remains that existed 200 years ago. I have really enjoyed the interplay of the characters who are well developed but I feel the world building is a bit obvious - there is little subtlety as you are hit over the head with the beliefs of each "county" but the world building does contain depth even though it lacks complexity. The four paragraphs on "DISAPPEARED, THE" covering Argentina, Chile and other countries can only suggest the grief and devastation wrought by thousands of political murders. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc. From Publishers Weekly Unfortunately, there have been enough abductions, hijackings and political hostage takings to necessitate The Encyclopedia of Kidnappings, a reference volume encompassing major (and sometimes minor) kidnappings throughout history. The Iran hostage crisis, the Lindbergh baby, and Leopold and Loeb are covered, but the book also relates the 1855 kidnapping of an Arizona rancher's daughter by Mexican outlaws, the abduction and murder of Emmett Till, and numerous Eastern European "skyjackers" trying to flee the Soviet bloc. . Michael Newton (Encyclopedia of Serial Killers) allots brief entries to victims, kidnappers, locations and relevant law eFrom Viking raids to Aztec sacrifices, from sexual slavery to terrorist attacks, kidnappings have been committed for profit, politics, religious beliefs, and sometimes for even for savage reasons. More than 900 entries survey kidnappings from Biblical times to the present, detailing notorious kinappers, well-known victims, infamous cases as well as numerous other examples of this crime. This volume studies this sinister branch of criminal activity. Featured cases include: "The Disappeared" - a term coined in Argentina for those who vanished and presumably died at the hands of Latin American governments and military juntas; Robert Franks (1924) - the teenage victim of wealthy "thrill killers" Nathan Leopold, Jr and Richard Loeb; Charles Augustus Lindbergh, Jr (1932) - the son of legendary aviator Charles Lindbergh who was kidnapped and murdered at 20 months old; Etan Patz (1979) - the six-year-old New York City boy whose disappearance galvanized the city and led to the declaration of National Missing Children's Day by former president Ronald Reagan; and "Truck Stop Killer" - an elusive kidnapper-murderer rumoured to have claimed numerous victims while haunting the US highways - but who may not even exist.
